It is another challenging day at the Kingston fire, which remains out of control. Windy conditions, combined with an Extreme Fire Weather Index, are expected to continue to contribute to extreme fire behaviour and growth again today.
The fire has grown to just over 4,895 ha, mostly along the northern boundary at the edge of Western Bay. The fire is anticipated to move towards Ochre Pit Cove by this evening.
There are four water bombers and four helicopters on the northern edge of the fire. Ground crews and heavy equipment will continue work on fuel breaks on the southern edge of the fire. A 20-person crew from Ontario and additional air support from Quebec arrived to assist yesterday. Coast Guard helicopters are assisting to enhance operational capacity.
The Holyrood fire remains at 22 hectares with no growth reported and is Being Held.
Suppression crews continue to hold the northern area of the fire at Martin Lake. Two water bombers and a bird dog aircraft will provide aerial support with ground crews today. Crews are focusing on the southwestern edge and cabin areas.
There is no impact on Route 360 this morning.
Crews are assessing another wildfire reported 19 km due south of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, east of the Trans-Labrador Highway. Helicopters and ground crew are responding. Both fires appear to be caused by lightning.
