It looks like the Avalon Peninsula will experience a winter storm this Friday. Snow is expected to begin on Friday and persist through the night.

A low-pressure system will pass well to the south of the Island on Friday, but it will be close enough to bring snow and strong winds to the Avalon Peninsula. Current projections suggest the southeastern Avalon Peninsula could receive around 20 cm of snow, while the northwestern and southwestern areas may see 5 to 10 cm.

If the low-pressure system shifts closer, snowfall totals could increase, whereas a further shift could lead to less snow.

Here are some important winter weather safety tips to keep in mind:

  1. Dress in Layers: Wear multiple layers of clothing to trap heat. Choose moisture-wicking fabrics for the inner layers to stay dry. Don't forget a hat, scarf, gloves, and insulated footwear.

  2. Prepare Your Vehicle: Ensure your car is winter-ready with antifreeze, winter tires, and a full gas tank. Keep an emergency kit with essentials like blankets, food, water, flashlight, and a first aid kit in your car.

  3. Avoid Travel in Severe Weather: If possible, stay home during heavy snow or icy conditions. If you must travel, inform someone of your route and expected arrival time. Check the weather forecast and road conditions before you leave.

  4. Clear Snow and Ice: Shovel snow from walkways, driveways, and steps as soon as possible to avoid slipping hazards. Use salt or sand to help prevent ice buildup.

  5. Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest weather reports, especially when a storm is approaching. Sign up for weather alerts on your phone or radio to stay updated.

  6. Avoid Overexertion: Shoveling snow and working in cold weather can lead to strain. Take frequent breaks, drink water, and don’t overdo it.

  7. Limit Exposure to Cold: Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, especially in extreme temperatures or wind chill conditions. Frostbite and hypothermia can set in quickly in these conditions.

  8. Inspect Your Home: Make sure your home is properly insulated and that your heating system is working. Keep extra blankets and warm clothes available in case of power outages.

  9. Use Heaters Safely: If you’re using space heaters, keep them away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended. Make sure they are in good condition and have an automatic shut-off feature.

  10. Watch for Ice on Sidewalks and Roads: Be cautious of black ice, especially early in the morning or late at night, when temperatures drop and ice can form quickly.

By following these tips, you can help stay safe and comfortable during winter storms.
