A rapidly intensifying low-pressure system is forecast to impact parts of Newfoundland and Labrador starting today and into the end of the week for some, with hazards that include significant rainfall, strong winds and potential coastal flooding.
The storm will cross Newfoundland on Tuesday, then pause over the Atlantic before drifting back toward Labrador through Thursday and Friday.
Rainfall totals that may reach 50 mm in some areas. Along the west coast, snowfall will fall inland and over higher terrain, possibly accumulating up to 15 cm.
Wind will gust up to 100 km/h, especially along exposed coastal regions.
There is a risk of coastal flooding due to storm surges and large waves.
Residents are urged to:
Secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages.
Avoid travel during peak wind and rain periods, especially along coastal roads.
Stay away from vulnerable coastal infrastructure such as wharves.
