Strong winter storm heading toward Newfoundland

A significant winter storm will impact Newfoundland and southeastern Labrador from Sunday night to Tuesday morning.


The low will bring snow, rain, freezing rain, and strong winds.


Avalon, Clarenville, and Burin Peninsula

Precipitation will start as snow and change to ice pellets and freezing rain before changing over to rain. Snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm are expected. Freezing rain could last for several hours Sunday night into Monday morning, with 5 to 10 mm of freezing rain possible. Rainfall amounts of up to 40 mm are also possible. Winds will gust to 100 km/h or greater along the coast.


Port aux Basques, Grand Falls-Windsor, Gander, and Bonavista North

Snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm are expected. Snow will change to ice pellets, freezing rain, and eventually rain. Freezing rain could last for several hours Sunday night into Monday morning, with 5 to 10 mm of freezing rain possible. Rainfall amounts of 5 to 15 mm are anticipated. Winds will gust from 80 to 100 km/h, except up to 120 km/h along portions of the coast.


Corner Brook, Deer Lake, Great Northern Peninsula, and Green Bay - White Bay

This area will likely see 15 to 35 cm of snow Sunday night until early Tuesday morning. Winds will gust between 90 and 120 km/h, especially in coastal areas.


Southeastern Labrador from L'Anse-au-Clair to Cartwright, including Eagle River

Snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm are expected with wind gusts between 80 to 100 km/h from Monday morning until early Tuesday morning.
