The snow has largely come to an end across eastern Newfoundland but not before dumping 40 cm of snow over the northeastern Avalon Peninsula.

Schools, government services, and several businesses have shuttered for the day to allow time to clean up.

It wasn't only the snow compounding clean-up efforts but winds gusted well in excess of 100 km/h in many areas causing drifting.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is advising against travel on the Avalon Peninsula.
