Today marks World Oceans Day, an annual event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of healthy oceans and the need to protect marine ecosystems.

Observed each year on June 8, World Oceans Day recognizes the critical role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. Covering more than 70 per cent of the planet's surface, oceans produce much of the world's oxygen, regulate climate, support biodiversity and provide food and livelihoods for billions of people.

Environmental organizations, researchers and governments used the occasion to promote ocean conservation efforts and encourage individuals to reduce pollution, support sustainable fisheries and protect coastal habitats.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, where many communities have deep cultural and economic ties to the ocean, the day also served as a reminder of the importance of marine resources to the province's history and future.

Marine scientists continue to monitor challenges facing ocean ecosystems, including climate change, plastic pollution, habitat degradation and the impacts of overfishing. Rising ocean temperatures and changing marine conditions have affected species distribution and ecosystem health in many regions.

World Oceans Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008 and is now observed annually in countries around the world through educational events, community activities and conservation campaigns.
