Summer officially arrives across Canada today, bringing the longest day of the year and signalling the start of a season many have been eagerly awaiting.

The summer solstice occurred this morning, marking the moment when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted most directly toward the sun. The annual event results in the year's greatest amount of daylight and officially ushers in the summer season.

While the solstice marks the beginning of astronomical summer, warmer weather often continues to build through July and August as land and ocean temperatures gradually increase.

For many, the arrival of summer represents a welcome change after months of colder weather.

Summer will continue until the autumnal equinox in September, when daylight hours begin to shorten and fall officially begins.
