Residents of the Avalon Peninsula and surrounding areas are advised to prepare for significant snowfall and strong winds on Friday.
Environment Canada has issued a Blowing Snow Advisory, forecasting 10 to 15 centimeters of snow accompanied by northerly wind gusts reaching up to 70 km/h. These conditions are expected to lead to poor visibility, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
The snowfall is anticipated to begin near noon, intensifying throughout the afternoon. As winds strengthen, blowing snow will reduce visibility, creating hazardous driving conditions. The combination of accumulating snow and gusty winds may lead to snowdrifts, making some roads difficult to navigate.
Travel and Safety Precautions
Avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm. Motorists who must venture out are urged to drive with caution, allow extra time for travel, and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Pedestrians should also take care, as icy conditions and strong winds may make walking treacherous.
Public works crews are on standby to begin snow-clearing efforts as soon as accumulation starts. However, with strong winds expected to cause drifting, repeated plowing may be necessary throughout the day and night.
Potential Power Outages
Newfoundland Power has warned of the possibility of power outages due to heavy snow and strong winds.
What’s Next?
The snow is expected to taper off by early Saturday morning, with calmer conditions forecast for the weekend. However, temperatures will remain below freezing, meaning any slush or melted snow could refreeze overnight, leading to slippery conditions.
