Pair of storms to bring severe weather to Newfoundland and Labrador

Two areas of low pressure will push across Newfoundland, the first on Christmas Day and the second on Friday night.


Storm 1

The first storm arrives early on Christmas morning and will spread snow across the Island with the exception of the southwest coast. Snow on the Avalon will change to rain in the afternoon. Winds will gust between 60 and 110 km/h.


Snow will move into coastal Labrador on Friday. Winds could gust between 100 and 120 km/h.


Snowfall Forecast:

  • St. John's 15-20 cm and 10-15 mm of rain

  • Gander 25-35 cm

  • Grand Falls-Windsor 15-20 cm

  • Corner Brook 5-10 cm

  • Cartwright 20-30 cm


Storm 2

The second storm will basically be a carbon copy of the first, with snow spreading across the Island on Friday night. Snow on the Avalon will change to rain. Winds will gust between 60 and 90 km/h.


Snowfall Forecast:

  • St. John's 15-20 cm and 5-10 mm of rain

  • Gander 20-35 cm

  • Grand Falls-Windsor 30-40 cm

  • Corner Brook 5-10 cm

  • Cartwright 15-20 cm
