Residents across Newfoundland are experiencing severe weather conditions today, as heavy rainfall and strong winds sweep through the region. Environment Canada has issued multiple warnings, including rainfall and wind warnings, particularly affecting the Avalon Peninsula and central areas.

Rainfall Warning

A significant rainfall event is underway, with total accumulations expected to reach between 25 to 40 mm, and up to 80 mm over the Burin and southern Avalon Peninsulas. The combination of heavy rain and mild temperatures is leading to rapid snowmelt, increasing the risk of localized flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage. Residents are advised to clear storm drains and downspouts to mitigate potential water accumulation.

Wind Warning

Strong southerly winds are accompanying the rainfall, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h inland and up to 100 km/h along parts of the coast.

Special Weather Statement

Additionally, a special weather statement has been issued regarding potential coastal flooding early Thursday morning. Low barometric pressure coinciding with high astronomical tides and moderate waves may lead to elevated water levels along the shoreline from Notre Dame Bay to Conception Bay.
