Evacuation Order Lifted for Walsh River Cabin Area as Wildfire Remains Contained

2 min read

Residents and cabin owners in the Walsh River Cabin Area are allowed to return to their properties after Labrador City lifted the evacuation order for the area.

Despite the change, the Walsh River Cabin Area remains under an evacuation alert until further notice. Evacuation alerts also remain in effect for Duley Lake, Throne Lake and the Tamarack Golf Course Road area.

According to forestry officials, wildfire suppression efforts are continuing and the fire has been classified as “Being Held.” The designation means crews have successfully established containment around the fire perimeter and are working to locate and extinguish remaining hotspots within the affected area.

Officials said significant progress has been made, but the wildfire has not yet been declared “Under Control.” As a result, evacuation alerts will remain in place until forestry officials determine conditions have improved enough to remove them.

Residents returning to the area can expect to see firefighting operations continue. Forestry crews, helicopters and other emergency response resources may remain active, while smoke from hotspots within the fire perimeter could still be visible.

Firefighting equipment, including hoses, pumps, sprinklers and other suppression infrastructure, may also remain in place. Residents have been asked not to disturb the equipment and to contact the Labrador City Fire Department if they have concerns about its placement.

Meanwhile, residents of Labrador City and Wabush are being encouraged to monitor the Air Quality Health Index for updates on smoke conditions and recommendations on protecting their health.

The provincial government is also reminding residents that mental health supports remain available. Walk-in services through Doorways – Mental Health and Addictions are available to Labrador-Grenfell residents Monday through Friday. In a medical emergency, residents should call 911, while mental health or addictions emergencies should be directed to 811 or the nearest emergency department.
