Evacuation order has been issued for Ochre Pit Cove and Salmon Cove as federal aid approved

Provincial officials provided an update on wildfires in the province.

An evacuation order has been issued for Ochre Pit Cove and Salmon Cove. Evacuees are to register at Carbonear Academy.

The Kingston fire is 2175 ha in size and has grown to the west and northwest. Today, there will be 30 ground crew, four tankers, and three helicopters, along with local firefighters. The focus today will be on the southern edge. Dozers will be building up fire breaks.

The Holyrood fire has had no growth and remains 22 ha in size.

The Bay d'Espoir fire is 220 ha in size, and there are firefighters and air support on the scene today. The highway is open, but could be closed as the fire progresses.

The federal government will provide military support and support from the coast guard.

The province is looking at increasing fines to $50,000 for illegal fires.
