With summer in full swing, it's important to keep safety top of mind when firing up the grill.
As more people gather outdoors for backyard barbecues, the risk of fires and injuries increases, especially when safety precautions are overlooked.
Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:
Keep grills at least three metres away from buildings, fences, and overhanging branches. Positioning the BBQ in an open space helps reduce the chance of accidental fires spreading.
Never leave the grill unattended while in use. Fires can flare up quickly, especially if fat drips onto flames.
Check gas connections before lighting a propane grill. Apply soapy water to hoses and fittings; if bubbles form, there may be a leak.
Keep a spray bottle of water and a fire extinguisher nearby. A small squirt of water can control minor flare-ups without damaging your food, while an extinguisher can help in a more serious emergency.
Always clean the grill after use. Built-up grease and food residue are a major cause of unexpected fires.
Allow coals to cool completely before disposal. Place them in a metal container, not a plastic bin or paper bag.
