Farmers and producers in Newfoundland and Labrador are being encouraged to apply for a provincial livestock insurance program aimed at protecting farms from losses caused by predators.
The program provides compensation to producers for the death or injury of sheep, goats, dairy cattle and beef cattle caused by dogs or other predators.
Applications for the program are open, with a deadline of March 31, 2026.
Farmers are also asked to consider several federal-provincial Business Risk Management programs available in 2026 to help stabilize farm income and manage risk.
Among them is AgriStability, which protects producers against significant declines in farm income due to factors such as production losses, rising costs or market changes. The enrollment deadline for the 2026 program year is April 30.
Producers can also enroll in AgriInsurance, which provides production insurance against uncontrollable natural hazards. The deadline for that program is also April 30.
Another option is AgriInvest, a savings program designed to help producers manage smaller income declines and invest in improvements that strengthen market income. The deadline to submit AgriInvest forms is Sept. 30.
The 2025 AgriStability program has been extended to accept late participants, with final applications due by Sept. 30.
More information on the livestock insurance program is available by calling 709-637-2077 or visiting the provincial agriculture department’s website.
